Deputy Director General Kwaku Aning, Head of the Department of Technical Cooperation, paid an official visit to Ethiopia and United Republic of Tanzania on 8–14 March 2014. During his trip, the DDG attended the International Advisory Management Committee (IMAC) Meeting of the Southern Tsetse Eradication Project (STEP).

Mr. Aning visited farmers in Sodo, Ethiopia to see community participation in field activities for the Southern Tsetse Eradication Project (STEP).

Tsetse flies are very harmful to farming activities in Ethiopia because they spread trypanosomes, which causes an animal disease called ‘nagana’ in cattle, and sleeping sickness in their human caretakers.

The IAEA supports STEP activities through the technical cooperation programme.

DDG Aning attended the opening of the International Management Advisory Committee Meeting (IMAC) of STEP.

DDG Aning visited the tsetse mass rearing facility at Kaliti, Ethiopia, where male flies are reared for irradiation and release into the wild. The sterile flies compete with wild males but no offspring result.

Mr. Aning visited the Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy Centre at Black Lion Hospital in the company of the First Lady of Ethiopia, Roman Tesfaye Abneh, and the Minister of Science and Technology, Demitu Hambisa.

During his visit to United Republic of Tanzania, Mr. Aning was interviewed by a local Swahili radio station, where he talked about his visit.

Mr. Aning toured United Republic of Tanzania's Ocean Road Cancer Institute during his visit.

The Institute offers numerous patient services including laboratory services, diagnostic imaging, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, cervical cancer screening, and HIV/AIDS care.

Mr. Aning also attended a meeting with the Executive Director and Staff of the institute, chaired by the Minister of Health.
