An IAEA service assisting Member States in work to ensure that the 23 million people worldwide who are exposed to ionizing radiation due to their work are protected by good regulatory systems marks its 15th anniversary this month.
So far, 17 countries have taken advantage of the IAEA’s Occupational Radiation Protection Appraisals (ORPAS) since the service was launched, and several more have requested the review.
ORPAS teams, which comprise IAEA and international experts, provide independent reviews of legislative, regulatory and practical settings in occupational radiation protection in Member States. The reviews are based on the IAEA’s Radiation Protection and Safety of Radiation Sources: International Basic Safety Standards.
Coinciding with the 15th anniversary, the IAEA launched a new online platform for Member States to provide information about how the missions are conducted, which organizations are involved and how to apply.
