New Director for Safeguards Information Treatment

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA, Dr. Hans Blix, has announced the following appointment:

Mr. Kaluba Chitumbo, from Zambia, as Director of the Division of Safeguards Information Treatment in the Department of Safeguards.

Born in 1946, Mr. Chitumbo studied Chemistry and Mathematics at the universities of Lusaka, Zambia and Uppsala, Sweden where he obtained a Diploma in Chemistry as well as Physical and Analytical Chemistry. After obtaining a Doctorate in Physical Chemistry at the university of Uppsala, he joined the National Council for Scientific Research in Lusaka in 1970, where he served as Senior Scientific Officer and later as Head of the Radioisotopes and Radioactive Materials Research Unit.

In 1984 he joined the IAEA's Department of Safeguards and has participated in safeguards inspections in various regions. Since 1993 he has been Section Head of one of the Safeguards Operations Sections.
