New Appointments at the IAEA

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei, has announced the following appointments:
Mr. Pierre Goldschmidt, from Belgium, as Deputy Director General, Head of the Department of Safeguards, to be effective 1 May 1999.
Mr. Goldschmidt studied Electro-Mechanical Engineering at the Free University of Brussels in Belgium and at the University of California, Berkeley, USA. He graduated with a Ph.D. in Electro-Mechanical Engineering from the Free University of Brussels. In 1979 he was awarded a diploma in Marketing and Management from the Solvay Ecole de Commerce. From 1966 to 1971 Mr. Goldschmidt was employed as an engineer at Belgonucléaire. In 1971 he joined Electrobel Engineering in Belgium as Engineer and then Chief Engineer. In 1977 he joined SYNATOM in Brussels where he has held the position of General Manager since 1987. Since 1978, Mr. Goldschmidt has been a member of the Advisory Committee of the EURATOM Supply Agency as well as of the Executive Committee of the Uranium Institute, London. From 1993 he has been a member of the Executive Committee of EURODIF, France, and for the last three years he has been Chairman of the Organisation des Producteurs d’Energie Nucléaire (OPEN) in France.
Mr. Arnold Bonne, from Belgium, as Director of the Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology, Department of Nuclear Energy.
Mr. Bonne studied Geology as well as Business Administration at the University of Louvain, Belgium. He graduated with a Ph.D. in Natural Sciences from the Universities of Louvain, Belgium, and Toulouse, France. He held various posts in the Belgian National Nuclear Research Establishment (SCK/CEN) at Mol, where he became Head of the Research Unit on the Disposal of Radioactive Waste in 1984. In 1993 he joined the IAEA where, in 1996, he was appointed Head of the Waste Technology Section in the Department of Nuclear Energy.
Mr. Shuja Nawaz, from Pakistan, as Director of the Division of Conference and Document Services in the Department of Administration, to be effective 1 April 1999.
Mr. Nawaz studied Economics and English Literature at the Gordon College in Rawalpindi, Pakistan and graduated with an M.Sc. in Journalism from Columbia University, New York, USA. His first assignment was as a newscaster and producer of the Pakistan TV Corporation in Islamabad, Pakistan. In 1972 he became News Assistant of the New York Times and in 1974 became Assistant Editor at the World Health Organisation in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1975 he joined the International Monetary Fund in Washington D.C., USA, where he was Editor. Since 1992, Mr. Nawaz has been Chief of the IMF Division of Conference and Training Support Services.
